If you put a potato that doesn't fit, it will get mashed from the pressure all around and get stuck, making more work than cutting it by hand... Also, although rarer, the potato shouldn't be much longer than the height of the cutter. A little longer is fine because as the plunger is pressed, the potato, when it reaches the surface on which we cut, since it is already in strips, has some elasticity so the plunger can complete its full stroke. But if it is much longer, then the blades and the plastic protrusions at the top will get clogged and it's extra trouble to clean them. With the right size potato and by sticking the potato well onto the blades so it is stable and upright, it does the job in 2 seconds and needs another 10 under the tap to be washed. Personally, I was very satisfied.
