The use of regional quantitative analysis in the investigation of regional phenomena, the study of the characteristics of areas, the determination of regional inequalities, regional planning, and the formulation, monitoring, and evaluation of regional policy is continuously expanding.
The development of methods in regional analysis has followed three main stages. In the first stage, regional science relied on the quantitative methods of economics. In the second stage, the multidisciplinary nature of regional science led to the search for and adoption of methods derived from other sciences, such as sociology, political science, and biology - biometry. Finally, in a third stage, which continues today, the autonomy of regional science and the specificity of its subjects have led to the development of its own quantitative methods.
The main quantitative methods of regional analysis are the subject of this book. The following chapters present the indicators and methods of regional analysis, their connection to the theory of regional science, and their utilization in the study of regional phenomena and in the design and evaluation of regional policy.
The book is divided into seven parts. The first part refers to the classification and presentation of regional statistical data, measures of central tendency and position, and their utilization in regional analysis. The second part addresses regional inequalities. It presents the criteria for determining inequalities and the measures used to quantify them.
These measures either originate from descriptive statistics or have been specifically developed for the needs of regional analysis. The third part of the book deals with specialization and localization issues. It presents the economic base model, indicators of the group of participation and specialization coefficients, and regional employment multipliers.
The fourth part discusses the investigation of the relationships between regional characteristics. In this part, indicators and models concerning correlation, regression, and spatial interdependence are presented, tailored to the needs of regional analysis.
The fifth part focuses on the description and delimitation of economic regions. In this part, the concepts of space and region are analyzed, and the typology of economic regions and the methods used in the description and delimitation of specific types of regions, as well as related applications, are presented.
The sixth part concerns structural regional analysis. In this part, divergence-participation analysis and specific applications of it are presented, as well as the possibilities of utilizing its results in the formulation and evaluation of regional policy.
Finally, the seventh part refers to the Analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, which provides the opportunity for qualitative exploration of the development process at both regional and sectoral levels.
