The subject of the creative and adventurous life of the architect and first urban planner of New Athens, Stamatis Cleanthes, occupied Kosmas Biri (1899-1980) from his youth, and was later completed in a detailed biographical narrative, which he dedicated "to the hero – yet to the unfortunate man of his fate," as he tersely described him.
Those hundred pages of this essay, typed by himself, were worked on, as we know, during the sad German Occupation. He preserved his valuable work and — according to our understanding — never expressed the wish to publish it until his death.
After a long period of reflection and postponements, we had the opportunity to consult the authoritative opinion of a scholar and writer, an expert on the history of the Renaissance of Athens in the 19th century, Professor of urban planning Alexandros Papageorgiou-Veneta. It was he who immediately pointed out the primary significance and qualitative uniqueness of this text.
Furthermore, he unreservedly expressed his opinion on the advisability of publishing it. He even offered, with his great experience and knowledge, to personally oversee the publication of the manuscript, highlighting its authentic form and the distinctive features of the archival model. For his substantial and valuable contribution, we extend our sincere thanks to him.
