Description

NAD has a distinguished reputation for creating exceptional amplifiers. Its lineage includes models such as the 3020 from 1978 and today's C 328, with numerous awards and five-star reviews. The C 316BEE competes admirably, with accolades like the EISA award for "Best Product 2008-2009" and top recommendations from international audio magazines and websites.

With the resurgence of vinyl, NAD has updated the design of the C 316, adding its highly acclaimed phono stage. This complex circuit combines low noise with high gain margins, eliminating noise and distortion. The RIAA equalization is extremely accurate, and it also features an infrasonic filter to prevent interference that could cause parasitic feedback.

Having read quite a few reviews from abroad, I was looking for an amplifier at a reasonable price that prioritizes sound over design and unnecessary digital "bells and whistles." This particular amplifier is perhaps the top choice in its category. Despite its nominal power (40W per channel at 8 Ohms), in practice, it behaves like a much more powerful machine, thanks to NAD's PowerDrive technology. What I mean is, all speakers that on paper say "8 Ohms" are actually not a steady 8 Ohms; for example, my Focals dip in resistance down to about 4.6 Ohms in the low-mid range. It's not extreme, but it means the amplifier needs to push current where the music has its "body." This is where the NAD shines. Even though it's 40W, the PowerDrive circuit detects these dips to 4 Ohms (or even 2 Ohms) and instantly delivers more current without distorting or clipping, so it will drive them comfortably.
I have it connected with a Wiim Ultra and a Topping DAC, and the result exceeds my expectations!
Its greatest advantage is its musical character. It doesn't try to impress with fake, sharp highs. On the contrary, it offers full, dynamic lows (bass), with excellent control and punch, making the speakers "come alive" even at low volumes.
Natural and warm mid frequencies: Vocals and natural instruments (guitars, piano) sound vivid, with proper texture and without a trace of digital harshness, relaxed highs, its treble is clear and detailed within its capabilities.
I was impressed by how small it is – just 8 x 29 cm (with the standard width of 43 cm). It's heavy for a budget amplifier, indicating a beefy power supply.
I found its remote control convenient because it's simple, small, and logically designed—I wish more manufacturers did the same.
I recommend it 101% for its category.
