Saouliko was the name of a seaside tavern just outside of Thessaloniki. Every Sunday (the Saturday holiday was abolished by law in 1924 as 'Jewish'), Roby Varsano would go there, until 1940, with relatives and friends to enjoy themselves and listen to Vembo, whom he liked very much.
Freedom is the name of a central square in Thessaloniki where Roby saw in 1942 all his relatives and friends being recorded on lists as carriers of an ancient disease. In the same square in 1957, he randomly recognized in the crowd the 'diabolical Max', the man who implemented the 'final solution' for those who bore the stigma of this disease in Thessaloniki.
Roby called the police to have him arrested, which indeed happened. But Germany would not accept Greek immigrants and would not grant a loan of several millions if they did not release him. However, his beloved city - Thessaloniki - had many paramilitaries, informers, Athonite monks, extortionists, black marketeers, tough guys who earned a lot as collaborators of the Nazis.
Roby had thousands of stories to tell his fellow citizens about those he saw perish in Auschwitz. But Saouliko had disappeared along with its patrons. He was left alone with the number 115.365, which would never be erased from his left arm.
