The stories contained in the book are authentic and are aimed at children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. They have been written by students from the Psychology and Sociology classes at Jenison High School (Michigan - USA).
Today, when we say Social Story, we mean a method that results in a text with specific characteristics that people with Autism Spectrum Disorders can use. A Social Story as a method requires the study and respect of the perspective and way of perception of the individual with autism.
A Social Story as a text is a short narrative with certain special features that describes situations or events, general ideas, cultural perceptions, or social skills, in such a way that makes sense to individuals with autism. With this logic, each Social Story addresses the needs and promotes social understanding on both sides, for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and those with typical development, on an equal basis.
Often, the result of a Social Story is the renewal of the sensitivity that the world shows towards individuals with autism and simultaneously the progress regarding the behavior of the individuals with autism themselves.
