Description

Description

By the end of the 7th century, a nomadic people of Turkish origin appeared on the banks of the Danube. These were the Bulgarians who quickly became one of the most dangerous enemies of Byzantium. The fierce Bulgarian raids invaded the northeastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, defeated the Byzantine army, and quickly formed a well-organized state.

Emperor Constantine IV was forced to recognize this new situation by signing an official peace treaty and was even obliged "to the shame of the Romans" to pay annual subsidies to the newly established state. This success "intoxicated" the subsequent Bulgarian rulers and pushed them to claim the same capital and imperial crown.

However, Byzantium woke up, rallied its forces, and managed to contain Bulgarian aggression, justifying once again its title as the leading military power of the time.

In the book titled "BYZANTINE-BULGARIAN WARS," all aspects of this devastating conflict are revealed in an exciting way, which shook the Aegean Peninsula for almost 400 years.

The informative text is enriched with rare photographic material, original maps, and magnificent artistic representations of costumes.
