In times of dramatic decline in political morality and political action - like our own - what significance can revisiting the political discourse of other eras, even the most 'elevated,' have? Does this revisit represent a romantic and 'literary' nostalgia, unrealistic and barren? Or, conversely, a valuable and relentless 'measure' for our times and a profound lesson in political thought and action? If I did not believe the latter, I would not have attempted, of course, to compile this book.
Today, more than ever, where the 'signifiers' and 'signifieds' of political thought are in a state of desperate inadequacy. This book aims to:
- Provide a sufficiently adequate taste of global political thought, a concise overview of political reflection and its development through the centuries, based on selections from the texts themselves, magnificent fruits of wisdom and experience, both positive and negative. The excerpting from these numerous and often lengthy 'monuments' becomes all the more imperative today, where very few have the time and means (even if they have the willingness) to read entire relevant works - which remain, however, 'timeless and perennial analyses' of political existence and 'foundations of modern political theory.'
- Encourage the reader to engage in a more thorough study of these works.
- Offer samples and models of political thought and ethics to citizens and politicians.
It is obvious that I am not speaking of 'imitation of actions,' institutions, speeches, etc. from past times, peoples, states, leaders. But their way of thinking and experiencing the 'Political' can serve as a valuable guide - to those, of course, who have the will and ability to grasp its essence and not just its shell and phraseology.
