During the period when Sardis was experiencing great wealth, all the renowned Greek philosophers of that time passed through there; among them was Solon the Athenian, who, after being requested by his fellow countrymen to become their lawgiver, left his homeland for a period of ten years under the pretext of wanting to travel to various countries.
In reality, however, he did this so that he would not be forced to abolish any of the laws he had established. Because the Athenians could not do such a thing on their own, as they had sworn great oaths that they would uphold for a decade the laws that Solon would enact.
