Description

Description

This book aims to provide a sociological analysis of the Macedonian Question. A general introduction is presented regarding the issues of collective memory, national formation, and ethnic confrontation, as these have emerged in the Balkans since the mid-19th century.

Additionally, an overview of the "name issue" of the 1990s is presented, as experienced in Greece and Bulgaria. A primary goal is for each reader to be able to find something useful within the pages of the book, regardless of political orientation, as a fundamental principle of the sociological approach is the respect for the distinction between scientific analysis and evaluative judgment.

The Macedonian Question is approached as an issue that owes its existence to the production and maintenance of different, mutually negating, and conflicting national narratives by the involved parties (Greece, Bulgaria, etc.), which leads to an inability to find mutually acceptable compromises.

In this direction, this book serves as a general guide for the reader, dissecting these contemporary confrontations and clarifying the relationship between national identity and collective memory. The author deconstructs these narratives with particular emphasis on their modern expressions, as shaped after the end of World War II. Ultimately, in contrast to these, he develops his own third (and outside the framework of rivalry) interpretation.
