When we decided to write this book about Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Kurt Raab told me that he had had this idea in mind for two years. Therefore, Fassbinder's death was the occasion, not the cause, for its realization.
It was clear to us from the beginning that this book should not deal at all with Fassbinder's cinematic art. Such books have already been published in plenty and surely many more will follow.
Kurt Raab wrote the story of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's life as he experienced it, living with him first-hand. Of course, he could only do this properly if he exposed everything without reservations and hesitations, not hesitating to reveal even his own self.
