This wonderful novel by D. consists of three major sections. The little Nyetotska is its heroine, and she herself tells her story. She doesn't remember her father. Her mother remarried.
The first part covers the life of the musician Yefimov, Nyetotska's stepfather, who, under the mysterious influence of a violin inherited from an Italian musician, becomes a genius violinist. However, Nyetotska's family life is filled with poverty, sadness, and quarrels between her mother and her stepfather.
In the second part, we find little Nyetotska in the home of a prince. The episodes follow one another: the little girl makes the acquaintance of the princess, meets a small boy, who is also an orphan. And eventually, she gets to know Katya, and a passionate love is born between them.
The third part takes place in the home of Alexandra Mikhailovna, the daughter of the princess from her first marriage. The end of the novel reveals once again that D. was an "inspired writer."
