Description

The "String Symphony" was composed in the autumn of 1988 at the request of the Yugoslav conductor ALEKSANDAR VUJIC. The work, in terms of technique, belongs to the postmodern period, as the composer uses techniques and styles from different periods. However, it predominantly employs elements and structures from the Romantic period, thus establishing a postmodern neo-Romantic trend.

The use of the aforementioned elements, styles, and structures was intentional and aimed to highlight the composer’s opposition to the excessive use of “modern techniques” by composers, which results in the isolation of creators from the audience. However, the mix of contemporary trends and techniques during the creation of the "Symphony" situates the work within the postmodern period, a classification that harmonizes with the period in which the work was created.

The "String Symphony" is dedicated to maestro Alex Vujic and has a duration of approximately 15 minutes. It consists of three parts: Fast, Slow, Fast. The first performance took place in May '91 in Belgrade by the "Belgrade Chamber Orchestra," conducted by Aleksandar Vujic. The concert was recorded and broadcast across the radio network of the then unified Yugoslavia, through the National Museum of Belgrade.

On 1/6/91, at a concert held for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Crete at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Athens, the "Belgrade Chamber Orchestra," invited by the "Crete Symphony Orchestra," among other pieces, repeated the "String Symphony" and performed for the first time the "Suite for Strings," which were recorded by the Third Program of ERT. The conductor was Aleksandar Vujic.
