The "Poor People" is a novel in the form of letters exchanged over six months between the elderly clerk Makár Alexéyevich Diévoskin and the young Variyenka Dobrosyólova.
Through the correspondence of the "Poor," we learn about their lives: they are humiliated and robbed by others, yet emotionally they are incredibly wealthy. They have created and live in their own world, with their own language, understood only by themselves and inaccessible to the uninitiated.
The letters of the "Poor" reveal the difficult path of thought among the impoverished who, with their fiery hearts, struggle against deprivation, personal and social fate, yet their knowledge is limited, preventing them from understanding the complex mechanism of the harsh and inhumane laws of the "upper" class.
