We find ourselves in bombed London during World War II. A child is born through a fire, with no previous history, no parents and origin. Half of his face is burned. They name him Matthew Septimus.
Aside from his mysterious birth, more mysteries accumulate around this child - young Matty: his relationship with the number seven, and he also moves 'invisible' in human society. From the moment he enters Mr. Pendigris' class, his life will change dramatically...
In addition to Matty, there is another central character in the novel: Sophie. The girl discovers that she has the power to impose herself on events. Matty directs his power towards good, while Sophie towards evil.
At some point, the paths of the main protagonists intertwine, and then events, like a raging avalanche, sweep away visions and illusions, leaving a vast emptiness where there was previously mental euphoria and wonder.
