Description & Specifications

We want to raise our children with principles. But they don’t listen to us. They shout. They do whatever they want. We shout back. How much longer will this last? Every day it gets worse. My son hits his sister. When we tell him something, he curses at us and threatens us. His father threatens to send him to a facility. But he isn’t afraid of us. My daughter has gotten involved with bad company. She lies. She steals from us. She probably also takes drugs. She doesn’t talk to me. When I try to say a word to her, she locks herself in her room. Or she disappears and returns late at night. I am a teacher in the sixth grade. One of our students at school has become a target of a group. They mock her and throw racist insinuations at her. If I say something, everyone acts like they didn’t hear anything. If I make it a topic, everyone will say that I am being excessive. We have a student who is acting like a leader. He threatens and intimidates the other children. Once he cursed at a colleague. We receive complaints from everywhere and we don’t know what to do. He is on his phone all day. He stays up all night. In the morning, he doesn’t wake up to go to school. If we say a word to him, he screams that we have no business interfering in his personal life. The child, like a vessel, when caught in a storm, needs an anchor that will not allow him to get lost in the open sea unable to stop. The child needs a caring person who will be his anchor. The anchor does not steer the ship, but is there to hold it steady when needed. Being an anchor means allowing the child to act autonomously, but being there so as not to let him be swept away by the storm.

So what does it mean in practice to be my child’s anchor? In the book 'The Calm Power', Haim Omer and his colleagues answer this question by detailing the philosophy, practices, and strategies they follow in their collaboration with parents and educators.
