In order to address an evident gap in the reliable depiction of the existing elements in Greece and Europe regarding church-state relations, this study examines issues such as religious education, the funding and taxation of religious communities in Greece and Europe, clergy salaries, and the possibilities for their transformation.
The history of church-state relations in Greece, the administrative fragmentation of the church in Greece, and the political use of polarizations surrounding the issue of church-state relations (and the potential separation of them) in the Greek public discourse are also central points of the study.
Instead of aiming to contribute to the public dialogue on the topic, this study raises an even more ambitious claim: to establish the condition that would make such a dialogue feasible, as today any related discussion tends to exhaust itself in a battle of symbols, flags, and values from both sides, rather than addressing the issue it is supposed to examine.
In this study, the first priority is given to the facts.
