As Jack Hamilton ascended higher into the stratosphere, he could see the beautiful sphere of Earth spreading out below him. And at the same time, standing there.
Around it, in an orbit, floated a thin mass of fiery particles - the Sun. It was the ancient Geocentric period that was being verified. A period with Earth at the dead center and all other celestial bodies subservient to it.
As he rose even higher, he discovered that he was looking into a giant lake, a lake large enough to hold Earth without a single ripple on its surface. And suddenly, to his surprise, Jack realized that it wasn't a lake - he was looking into a colossal eye - An eye in the sky.
He was trapped in someone else's personal world. Someone who didn't seem very rational. A purely religious world, governed by a harsh replica of the God of the Old Testament. A world in which sinners are miserable and the righteous are relentless and intolerable.
