BOOKS A` - C`: Descriptive botanical work. Basic scientific concepts. The domesticated and wild trees.

Theophrastus, born in Eresos on Lesbos around 370 BC, studied at the Platonic Academy and was a close friend of Aristotle. After the Stagirite fled Athens (323 BC), he succeeded him as the director of the Lyceum. He taught many students, among whom were Menander, Demetrius of Phalerum, and Dinarchus. He died at an advanced age in 287 BC.

His works, both in theme and titles, refer to Aristotle, whom he generally followed. He dealt with all areas of natural science as well as philosophy, rhetoric, and political thought. From his philosophical work, we possess few fragments, but a large part of his writings on natural history and the 'Characters' have survived.
