The Library is a mythographical work, published under the name of the Athenian grammarian Apollodorus. However, it is most likely that it does not belong to him, and the problem of identifying the true author remains unresolved.

Equally impossible is the certain dating of the Library, which is generally placed in the 1st or 2nd century AD. It serves as a summary of ancient Greek mythology, which may have been used in schools as an introduction to Greek literature.

It therefore includes a summary of Greek myths and legends about gods and heroes, as they were recorded in the literature of early, classical, and Hellenistic antiquity.
