The Library is a mythographic work that was published under the name of the Athenian grammarian Apollodorus. However, it is most likely that it does not belong to him, and the problem of identifying the real author remains unresolved. Equally impossible is the definitive dating of the Library, which is generally placed in the 1st or 2nd century A.D.

This is an epitome of ancient Greek mythology, which was perhaps used in schools as an introduction to Greek literature. It therefore includes a summary of Greek myths and legends about gods and heroes, as they had been recorded in the literature of early, classical, and Hellenistic antiquity.

The value of the Library lies in the fact that it serves as our main source for works that are not preserved today, but mainly in that it accurately conveys the traditions and beliefs of the Greeks regarding the origin and early history of the world and their race.
