Description

Description

ON SMELLS: A study of odors in nature. Types and differences.

ON FISH: A fragmentary physiological work. Special reference to the movement from the liquid element to the dry.

AFTER THE PHYSICS: A brief introductory work that raises questions about first principles, being, motion, etc. Aristotelian influences.

NATURAL OPINIONS: Issues of physics, a combination with earlier theories, in a work with a fragmentary form.

ON SENSATIONS: The senses and their role. A physiological treatise.

Theophrastus, born in Eresos of Lesbos around 370 BC, studied at the Platonic Academy and became friends with Aristotle. After the Stagirite left Athens (323 BC), he succeeded him in the leadership of the Lyceum. He taught a multitude of students, including Menander, Demetrius of Phaleron, and Dinarchus. He died at an advanced age in 287 BC. His works, both thematically and in terms of titles, refer to Aristotle, whom he generally followed. He dealt with all areas of natural science as well as philosophy, rhetoric, and political thought. From his philosophical work, we have few fragments, but a large portion of his physiological writings and the 'Characters' have been preserved.
