Description & Specifications

The titles and content of the nine presentations define and promote significant aspects of the current dialectological practice and research: firstly, they seek to re-examine the relationships between ancient Greek dialects and today's modern Greek dialects.

Secondly, there is particular interest in the fate of the Pontic dialect and even more so the Cypriot dialect, which has been under scrutiny in recent years, often disparaged, supposedly for the benefit of standard modern Greek.

Finally, for the first time, the purist language is also included in the dialect complex, both as a peculiar, or even artificial, linguistic code and as a rhetorical choice, which continues to appear in the realm of modern Greek prose and poetry.

The Center for the Greek Language considers that the present volume of proceedings constitutes a useful framework for further research and scientific dialogue on a topic of particular importance, at least to the extent that the dialects and dialectology encompass and complement modern Greek common language, pointing to some of its traditional cores.
