Freedom and Death is Kazantzakis' contemporary Iliad. The story is set in late 19th century Crete, focusing on the imposing struggle between Greeks and Turks, between Christianity and Islam. A new revolt begins that tries to compare with those of the years 1854, 1866, and 1878, and the island is once again plunged into confusion. In the village of Megalokastro, a Cretan fighter, Captain Michalis, confronts the Turkish bey, his blood brother. The life of the local community continues unstably, but is disrupted by outbursts of violence.
