Description

Description

Today, the works of Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) are among the most famous and recognizable in the world. In 'Sunflowers', 'Starry Night', 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear', and many other paintings and drawings, we recognize an artist exceptionally skilled in depicting mood and place through paint, pencil, charcoal, or chalk. During his lifetime, van Gogh faced not only the indifference of the contemporary audience but also devastating periods of mental illness. The episodes of depression and anxiety would ultimately cost him his life, when in 1890 he committed suicide a few days after his 37th birthday. This richly illustrated introduction follows the story of Vincent van Gogh from his earliest works with peasants and rural laborers to the bright Parisian period and his final, feverish creative outburst in Southern France during the last two and a half years of his life.
