The book "My Family and Other Animals" is the enchanting story of a rare and magical childhood on the island of Corfu by the beloved British naturalist Gerald Durrell, beautifully reissued as part of the Penguin Essentials series.
The Durrell family, freed from the ills of the British climate, embarks on the island of Corfu, where they discover that they must early on share their various villas with a variety of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, frogs, bats, and butterflies.
With great humor and charm, "My Family and Other Animals" offers a wonderful recount of a rare, magical childhood.
Gerald Durrell was born in 1925 in Jamshedpur, India. He returned to England in 1928 and settled in Corfu with his family. In 1945, he joined the staff of Whipsnade Park as a student, and in 1947 he conducted his first animal-collecting expedition to Cameroon. Founder of the Jersey Zoological Park in 1959 and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in 1964, Durrell gained fame through his works and TV series "Two in the Bush". He published his first book, "The Overloaded Ark", in 1953, which became a bestseller. Gerald Durrell passed away in 1995.
