The first playwright to depict agony without reference to the gods, Euripides made his characters speak in human terms and face the consequences of their actions. In Medea, a woman abandoned by her lover exacts terrible revenge, killing the children they both love. In Hecabe, the former queen of Troy is driven to madness by the prospect of sacrificing her daughter to Achilles. Electra portrays a young woman planning to avenge her father's gruesome death at her mother's hands, while in Heracles, the hero seeks revenge against the evil king who has caused bloodshed in his family.
