An idyllic picture of a boy's childhood along the banks of the Mississippi River, "The Adventure of Tom Sawyer" is the work of Jeff Phillips that comes closest to the experiences of his own childhood, growing up in Hannibal in the 1840s.

Tom, full of energy and mischief, enjoys his childhood pranks and pursuits with his friends, Huck Finn, the outcast, and Joe Harper, his best friend. However, in the town's cemetery, Huck and Tom witness a murder committed by the local wanderer Injun Joe. They promise not to reveal to anyone what they saw, and so begins their journey into adulthood as Tom struggles with his own morality, guilt, and anxiety.

A "coming of age" story, through Tom's adventures and relationships with others, he becomes more responsible and more aware of his own inner conflict. Through the central characters of Tom and Huck, Twain satirizes the moral rigidity of society and the hypocrisy of adults, while at the same time offering a nostalgic portrayal of a young boy's journey into adulthood.
