Description

Fast 85 mm f/1.8 prime lens for portrait photography. From classic headshots or bust shots to environmental portraits, this 85 mm full-frame mirrorless lens captures your subjects with breathtaking sharpness. Its advanced optical performance opens new possibilities for details and nuances, even compared to previous f/1.4 prime lenses.

Small or big moments. Staged or spontaneous shots. This fast 85 mm f/1.8 portrait lens offers exceptional versatility. Nikon's wide Z mount ensures sharp details across the entire frame, even when shooting with available light. Focusing is fast, and the Nikon Z camera can lock onto your subject's eye whether it's alone or a face in the crowd.

The bokeh has a beautiful natural appearance and gently grades towards the edges of the frame. Your focus point is always rendered sharply, and highlights are reproduced as soft points. Skin tones are rendered naturally, and edge-to-edge sharpness is impressive, even when shooting at maximum aperture. The minimum focusing distance of just 0.80 m gives you control over the frame from close-ups to infinity.

Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat reduces ghosting and flare for greater image clarity. Every element of the scene is perfectly reproduced, even in backlit conditions.

From emotionally charged close-ups to night scenes with rich bokeh, this 85 mm lens allows you to beautifully isolate your subjects. The silent control ring lets you focus with absolute precision. Focus breathing is almost eliminated.

The wide, textured control ring ensures precise and intuitive operation. It can be used for silent control of the aperture or exposure compensation and as a focus ring when shooting in manual focus mode.

Every movable part of the lens barrel is sealed to protect against dust and water droplets.

I use the lens as a complement to the Nikon 24-120 f4 S, either for portraits or for night shots on the Z5, and it can deliver professional results. In the samples you see some clicks from street photography, meaning I didn't have the time to set up and focus at my leisure. And yet it performed amazingly. It is not an all-around lens; it is complementary to a zoom with more flexibility. If someone wants to spend the money, they should get it, especially during a cashback offer, as I did.

  • Wonderful lens, at a very good price! Wonderful bokeh, light and fast (with the Z9).

Unfortunately, this is the second Nikon Z series lens with mold on the internal glass of the lens... I can't explain why, how older lenses even from the '70s, have never caused me the slightest problem..

I come here having worked with the AFS 85mm 1.8 on the D750 as well as on the Z6ii.
So let's start with the basics. The lens has some good features and some not so good.
The good thing is that it is perfectly designed. Its weight (almost 470g) is heavy but distributed evenly, and you don't feel it. The handling on the camera is even better. You can finally shoot handheld video at 85mm with ease even if you are inexperienced. The build quality is amazing; however, the lens is a DIVA compared to the AFS, which was rugged in all aspects.
The image is what you would expect from such a lens. Not particularly contrasty but not completely flat either. It is a lens in the Nikon philosophy with skin tones close to reality. Its AF is incredibly better than that of the AFS. It has no focus breathing, it doesn't lose focus anywhere (I tested it at night in a nightclub). I rarely needed to override it to focus correctly.
One might say it is a lens without character. It does what it needs to do quietly, odorlessly, effectively, and sometimes you know that’s not a bad thing.
I give it 4/5 because no one is perfect.

Amateur, I have the amazing 24-120 F4 on the Z5 but because I wanted to shoot at night and since I constantly worked somewhere between 75-90mm, I bought this one (from Germany, 760 with shipping).
I'm thrilled, don't expect a "professional" review, the autofocus is from another planet, the sharpness is incredible even at f1.8, the colors are fantastic day and night.
With this lens, I realized what my camera can capture.
Don't change cameras, invest in premium lenses!

The lens is truly awesome... At 1.8, it is better than the fx 1.4 which costs almost twice as much, and of course, it is much better for video where it also provides stunning bokeh, which is also true for photography, of course. I got it on sale for 700 euros when there was a cashback, so we are talking about real value for money.
I should add that the autofocus is not as fast as the 35mm and 50mm unfortunately.
