MAIGRET is in Antibes, a town and resort with beautiful villas on the Côte d'Azur, near Nice. A peculiar Australian named Brown, who lived in a villa with his mistress and her mother, has been found murdered.
At the dilapidated yet atmospheric Liberty Bar, some other women are vying for a relationship with the victim. Secrets and strange balances exist within the small community of the resort. We get the sense that Maigret is much more interested in discovering who the victim was than in searching for the murderer himself.
This is one of Maigret's first famous stories, where he develops his personal code of law.
