All day I passed by them, filthy, tired, unshaven, windswept soldiers, walking along the paths of the brown, endless, bare, hill-covered Thracian countryside. No orchestras, no aid organization stations, no permits; nothing but lice, dirty blankets, and mosquitoes at night.
