Description

Although this edition is aimed at a wide readership, I tried to take into account not only the desire of the average reader to pass the time pleasantly by reading a sample of Latin literature, which unfortunately is little known to the Greek audience, but also the academic needs of the student of Latin Philology and Theater Studies. [...] The translation is neither metrical nor poetic, but "reader-friendly". Although I tried to capture the spirit rather than the letter of the Latin text (especially regarding the comic neologisms of Gripus, Trachalio, Labrax, and Sceparnio, the archaic vocabulary of Ptolemaic and the tragic, or occasionally melodramatic, tone of Palæstra), I believe that my translation has not strayed too far from Plautus' writings and, therefore, can be used as a reliable study guide (but not a substitute) for this work in Departments of Classical Studies or Theater Studies. [...] (from the preface by Kostas Panagiotakis)
