The centennial anniversary of the First World War brought to the forefront the event that changed the history of the European continent and international relations, as the first link in a chain of dramatic developments that indelibly marked the history of the twentieth century. The unprecedented carnage in the trenches of the Western Front and in the other battlefields left a deep scar on the European consciousness, but also brought about the emergence of the first ideas for reconciliation and peaceful cooperation among European countries.
The book examines the historical evolution of the perception of the First World War in Europe, with emphasis on the major powers that played a decisive role in both the course of hostilities and the subsequent shaping of dominant trends in historiography and the memory of the war. It traces the gradual transition from the dominance of testimony to the era of historical interpretation of the war, thanks to the creative influence of contemporary historiographic currents and through the continuous formulation of new research questions.
It also highlights the significant gaps in the study and memory of the war in a significant part of the European continent, under the influence of various heterogeneous factors, while attempting an initial assessment of the impact and challenges left behind by the commemorative period.
Through a multitude of historical references, the extremely complex mosaic of perceptions of the First World War in the European space is revealed, making it clear why this war has been a major case study for the development of memory studies on an international level. It also becomes evident that, more than a hundred years later, the Great War, with its direct and long-term consequences, remains an event that directly concerns every European citizen.
