On July 26, 1822, the exhausted army of Dramali, in its attempt to retreat towards Corinth, attempted to pass through the treacherous narrow passages of Dervenakia. There, it fell into the artistic trap of Theodoros Kolokotronis and suffered a terrible defeat.

In the following days, the unbearable stench from the unburied corpses and the swarms of birds that gathered there to satisfy their hunger composed a scene of hell. For many years, the multitude of bones that remained in the "chasm of death" were tangible evidence of one of the greatest catastrophes of the Turkish army.

But how did the Elder of Moria manage to achieve the greatest victory of the Revolution? The answer is given in this volume of the "Great Battles" series. A group of specialized scientific collaborators studied and analyzed in depth all the existing sources and presents its extremely interesting conclusions.

The dark background of the Turkish campaign is revealed, the strategic plan is analyzed, and the invasion of Dramali in Moria is narrated day by day. At the same time, the Greek reaction is recorded and the strategic genius of Kolokotronis is highlighted.

But what happened after Dervenakia? Did the Turkish army cease to be a threat to the Peloponnese? The articles referring to the fall of Nafplio and the encirclement of Dramali's army in Corinth prove that the ambush in Dervenakia was only the first part of a broader strategic plan by the Greek commander-in-chief.

Of course, the tribute could not be complete without mentioning the intense conflict between Kolokotronis and the government, in the midst of the war, which almost severed the thread of the Revolution's life.
