The six short stories in the collection The Leaders are the first published works of Mario Vargas Llosa. They all bear the characteristics that would later mark his mature works, establishing the author as a pioneer of Latin American literature.
They depict a harsh male world, where problems are faced with violence and personal choices are always directed by the expectations and demands of others. The novella The Little Men is translated into Greek for the first time. Although it was written much later than the short stories in the collection, it moves in the same spirit and shares common themes with at least two of them: the teenage group of the neighborhood and how this influences and shapes the lives of its members.
The narrator and protagonist at the same time is the group itself. And as in all the great works of the Nobel laureate, the narrative continuously shifts from the present to the past and from the individual to the collective, in a game that leaves the reader enchanted.
