This multi-page book is part of the Philokalia of the Sacred Hesychasts with its translation. The Philokalia is an extensive and therefore somewhat cumbersome work; however, it is also available for a second selection of fine pages, which here has been made with a particular criterion focused on the ascetic experience of prayer, which is the heart of the book of the Philokalia.
To this end, we relied on the selection of texts related to prayer made by Stelios Ramfos in his book The Unimaginable Nothing, ed. Armós, Athens 2009). Thus, the volume of the text was reduced, allowing for the coexistence of the ancient text and the translation, which improves understanding and makes any possible translational inaccuracies directly checkable and therefore less significant.
The text was taken from the well-known edition by Asteros. In our translation effort, we seriously considered the translation by Antonios Galitis, of the The Garden of the Virgin Mary editions, the first edition of which was published in 1984. Our difference lies in the fact that his fidelity is based on the letter, while we wanted to not leave the meanings in their formal expression, as the many centuries that have passed since the writing of the texts demand further semantic elaboration of the letter.
The order of the translated texts is not that of the Philokalia, but is chronologically consistent with the findings of current scientific research. In the text, where there is an alternative proposal from previous publishers of Asteros, we adopted what we believe to be the more suitable word or phrase and made some silent corrections in spelling and punctuation.
We wanted the spelling of the translation to be more consistent with the spirit of the book, as well as with the ethos and history of the Greek language. Where there were translations of Philokalic texts by Nikodimos Agioritis or unknown authors, we preferred them, as they provide beautiful examples of vivid clerical expression.
