The timer goes into standby mode and after a while, it automatically switches back to the time. I don't want to see the time, I want the timer to always be in standby mode to time performances. Besides, the cover on the back where you access the battery doesn't have the necessary indentation (even there the manufacturers were stingy) to open it, and it's cumbersome. Friendly advice: stay away. Unless you have money to throw away, then buy it with your eyes closed.
