The Mystery of the Holy Unction is celebrated every Great Wednesday evening in the Sacred Churches or at home for someone who is sick or grieving, or for anyone who requests it.
It includes seven Apostolic and Evangelical passages as well as seven supplicatory prayers, and at the end, a special prayer of forgiveness is read. The Holy Unction is typically performed by seven priests or by one priest in homes.
On a table, the image of the Virgin Mary or a Saint is placed, along with a lamp filled with wine and oil, a vessel with flour or wheat, and seven candles are placed on top. During the ceremony, the faithful hold lit candles.
After the Holy Unction, those present at the ceremony are anointed by the priest with the Blessed oil. With the flour, we make Prosphora.
