The rainwater was pounding forcefully against the glass, and the large kitchen clock – the one with the cuckoo that had enchanted her during the first days of her stay in that apartment in Astoria, New York – had struck five o’clock. The sky was heavy and cloudy, and the gloom outside created the illusion that night had already fallen. Some lights in neighboring apartment buildings had been on for a while, and Electra was absentmindedly watching the drops running down the windowpane, some hurried and fleeting, others indecisive, confused about what was about to happen, standing still for a moment, stubborn, swelling and filling more and more, holding on, it seemed, with nails and teeth before surrendering in turn to the inevitable, to the law of gravity, that is. Some window must have been left open, because the smell of damp earth mixed with that of the coffee that had been cooling untouched in her cup for hours reached her nostrils. A baby was crying in one of the neighboring apartments, a housewife was cooking something with plenty of garlic. And although all her senses were deliberately trapped in foreign and meaningless stimuli, her soul recognized, with terror it is true, that the essence of the whole world – at least her world – was here, between those four walls that had been suffocating and relentlessly pressing down on her for hours.
