How to Wear a Backpack
First, lift the backpack using the carrying handle, and then slip your arms one by one through the shoulder straps. If the bag is too heavy and you find it difficult to lift, kneel on one knee and lift the backpack to rest its bottom on your other thigh. Then, slip your arms through the shoulder straps one at a time.
You should always avoid lifting a backpack from the ground to place it on your back while standing with your knees straight.
How to Adjust the Backpack to Fit You
To properly adjust a backpack, it should be loaded, and all straps should be loose. The order in which the straps are adjusted is very important. Start first with the main hip strap, then the shoulder straps, and finally the load lifters.
Fasten the main hip strap. The center of the main hip strap should close around the hip bones. Tighten the shoulder straps. The padding on the straps should rest comfortably on your shoulders. However, be careful not to over-tighten the straps, as this will transfer too much weight from the hips to the shoulders.
Tighten the load lifters. The load lifters (attached to the shoulder straps) should be anchored near the shoulder blades. The backpack adjusts to your back with the careful tightening of these straps. Tighten the auxiliary hip straps.
Fasten and adjust the chest strap. This is located between the shoulder straps. Proper adjustment relieves the joints in your shoulders from the weight of the backpack. Ensure that the shoulder straps are clear of any other items and sit comfortably on the shoulders.
The length of the backpack's back is correct if the load lifters form an angle between 20° and 30° with your shoulders. If the angle is less than 20°, you should choose a longer back. If the angle is greater than 30°, you should choose a shorter back.
How to Pack a Backpack
You should only carry the essentials. The closer heavy items are to your body, the easier it is to wear a backpack and balance it while carrying. Heavy items should be placed above lighter ones and ideally at shoulder height.
Most backpacks have additional straps that allow you to tie items, such as tent poles at the top or sleeping bags at the bottom of the backpack. The main interior space and external pockets allow you to pack and organize clothes and other personal items neatly.
