Under no circumstances should we perceive the Dance of Death as a work of despair, as its main objective is to serve as a form of social critique, self-criticism from the author, as well as from each viewer individually. Therein lies its entire greatness.
If we want to categorize the work into a genre, it would rather fit into that of the theater of irony. It consists of a well-crafted connection of comedic and tragic elements.
In his correspondence with the author, Friedrich Nietzsche expresses his great surprise and enthusiasm for this performance. For the philosopher, the text is the ultimate expression of the deeper meaning of love, war, and the deadly hatred that eternally characterizes the two sexes.
