The plot of the work takes place during the last three days before Easter. In the first and second acts, we meet Elis, a rather unsuccessful professor, his fiancée Christina, his mother, Mrs. Efst – a tragic woman who pretends not to understand the deadlock the entire family has reached, the family’s boarder, Benjamin, and Mrs. Efst's little daughter, Eleonora, who has been locked away in an asylum for a long time and escaped to celebrate with her family. Lindqvist, the creditor, whose mere shadow causes terror in the first two acts, becomes the central character in the third act and brings a happy interlude to the life of the entire family.
Written in the hallmark of our century and following the crisis of "Inferno," Easter represents a milestone of Strindberg's dramaturgy. We are precisely at the moment when the great Swede is recovering from his psychoneurotic crises and is trying to rebuild his life for the last time, to find a balance between his positive spirit and his mystical temperament, to overcome the phobias that haunt him and the specter of decline. His instinct, unyielding and demonic, commands him once again. The result of this command is many works, contradictory among themselves both in genres and in quality.
From historical dramas (Gustav Vasa, Henry IV, etc.) it leaps into dream drama (Sonata of the Specters), from "chamber plays" (Thunder and Lightning) to strange comedies (There Are Crimes and Crimes), from harsh naturalism (Dance of Death) to urban drama (Easter). All these categories of works, which take shape within the last twelve years of his life, are stamped by Strindberg's personality.
In the one-act play Pariah, the issue of justice is brought to the forefront. Strindberg himself described his work as "a struggle of wits" because a battle is unleashed by both characters to devour the opponent beyond any regulation. Cynicism, the exploitation of decency, insults, the unethical past of both lead to a very rough marathon, where until the very last moment it is impossible to conceive of the winner, as "the minds of my heroes," Strindberg confesses, "I let them work irregularly, just like in real life."
