"Call the Gendarmerie," said Bekas impatiently. "I want to have news by the afternoon." He left his office looking gloomy. He didn't like cases that resembled novels and felt a bit ridiculous caring about such fantastical details. He was now ashamed of the order he gave to his assistant. What was the man in the white suit doing on the Thessaloniki train? And, after all, was there really a man in a white suit? Never in his thirty years of service had Inspector Bekas ever been this annoyed. He felt like he was being mocked. That there was a ghost playing with him. And this ghost was wearing a white suit.

This was the fourth death, and this time, it was neither "suicide" nor "accident." It was a clear murder with a pistol, but a perfectly legal murder." "The 13th Passenger" by Yiannis Mari was first published in 1962 in 129 installments in "Apogeumatini," illustrated by M. Gallias, and was released as a book in 1971 by the short-lived "Pergameni" editions. Since then, although it is one of the best novels by the prolific author, it has not been reissued. "Agra" editions are launching the "13th Passenger" as part of a series of publications of "lost" texts by the "father" of the Greek detective novel.

The two major cases of Inspector Bekas were "Crime in Kolonaki" and the complex inheritance case in "The 13th Passenger." "The 13th Passenger" is the most typical work of Mari featuring Bekas as the hero. The case of the large inheritance "was the most serious and worst case he handled in his thirty years of police life. A case in which he failed."
