Description & Specifications

Shortly after the declaration of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the first refugees arrived on the island of Syros, including people from Kydonias (Aivaliotes), from Moschonisi, from Smyrna, from Chios, from Psara, from Kasos, and from Sterea Hellas, among others.

These persecuted refugees established a new city, Ermoupoli, in the early 19th century. Along with them, they brought their customs, traditions, and local dialects, the idioms of their homeland. The subsequent generations, a blend of these refugees, used this vast array of words and phrases in their everyday speech, which had arrived from all parts of Greece.

However, as the years pass, the erosion of time also affects the idioms of Ermoupoli. The latest generations know much fewer idioms, and little by little, they tend to disappear. I wanted to document these idioms before they fade into oblivion. It was a laborious task that took about nine years to record most of these idioms.

The etymology of the words was provided to understand their history, the evolutionary phases of our language, and the idioms were semantically interpreted as they were expressed in Ermoupoli. The lexical treasure of our place serves as a lasting legacy of memory, history, and culture.
