The School for Wives was a scandal in its time — so great that only Tartuffe would eventually surpass it. And this was no coincidence: Molière targeted the current morality and social hypocrisy, taking a stand on a pressing issue of his time, an issue that touched the very foundation of society, the family.
For the theme of this work is none other than the question of marriage and, specifically, the choice of a spouse. By ridiculing the prevailing notions that recognized only the father or the husband as having the exclusive right to choose, the great comedian proclaims that the school of ethics is not the isolated monasteries, the moralistic readings, and the various prohibitions and restrictions, but rather social life itself when it is realized with a spirit of absolute freedom and trust.
In an era like ours, where we daily observe that real equality and respect for the personalities of women continue to be desired, this work remains just as pressing and relevant.
