History is always written by the victors or the dominant classes, who "think the pleasant things are good and the interests are just," as Thucydides teaches us. Greek history is rife with myths.

Not because historians are liars or forgers, but because the truth is usually buried beneath layers of centuries. Moreover, historical truth is dangerous. It is carefully hidden behind political self-interest and ideological masks.

Often, through secret diplomacy, unbeknownst to the people, the traces of history are lost in the mists of time and in the sealed chambers. Evidence is buried, disappears, or is distorted to cover up crimes, betrayals, and disgraceful deals between states and officials.
