This book presents the work of five historians who examine the "Greek case" at the Council of Europe from 1967 to 1969, as well as the implications of the issue in international politics.

It focuses on the international condemnation of the military junta's dictatorship for conducting torture, in which Denmark played a leading role, ultimately leading to the effective coercion of Greece to withdraw from the international organization.

It studies an event and a moment in time when the paths of two small European states, geographically distant—Denmark and Greece—came together; one from the North and one from the South. It seeks to explore the complex "direct" interactions between such countries, to some extent "transcending" the heavy shadow of the major powers, the study of which is often treated as mandatory—almost as a coercion—in scholarly research.

On the other hand, it is not a simple examination of the bilateral relations between Denmark and Greece, that is, an interesting but relatively "small" episode in European history. The Greek case at the Council of Europe proved critical for European affairs, the development of European organizations, and political culture, as well as for the dynamics of international politics in general.

The Danish Institute in Athens is a non-profit, independent entity operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research of Denmark. The aim of the Institute is to promote research, education, and culture related to Greek and Mediterranean archaeology, history, literature, architecture, visual arts, and cultural traditions—ancient, modern, and contemporary.

The Institute is recognized by the Greek Ministry of Culture as an archaeological school and has conducted excavations in Kefalonia, Rhodes, Mount Pelion, Chalkida, Calydon, Piraeus, Chania, Lechaion, Delphi, and Sikyona with the participation of Greek and Danish academics and students.

The academic studies of the Institute are published in the academic periodical publication Proceedings of the Danish Institute at Athens as well as in the series of monographs Monographs of the Danish Institute at Athens. The Institute maintains close ties with educational institutions in Denmark. It hosts conferences and symposia for international academics, courses for Danish students and high school teachers, and organizes hosting programs for Danish researchers, educators, students, artists, writers, and journalists.

Additionally, the Institute welcomes visits from high school classes and groups on educational trips, facilitating their access to museums and archaeological sites. In Greece, the Institute organizes an open lecture program in international languages as well as cultural events such as readings, concerts, and exhibitions. These cultural events are often co-organized with Greek organizations or institutions, and admission is always free to the public.
