The noblewoman of Smyrna, Filio Baltatzi, and her children manage to survive the Asia Minor Catastrophe and reach Greece. They have lost everything and are trying to start over from scratch.

The population exchange gives them the opportunity for a better life in the Muslim neighborhoods of Thessaloniki. There, alongside refugees from Pontus, Eastern Thrace, and the rest of Asia Minor, the scene for their new life is set.

Thessaloniki becomes the homeland of the refugees, after many difficulties, as its multicultural population has been irreparably affected by the great fire of 1917. The refugees will rebuild their lives as the city's Jews gradually head toward their destruction.

This work is a continuation of "My Beloved Smyrna" and was written after research on Greek and foreign texts related to the troubled era of the interwar period.
