In 1980, Michalis Ch. Fotopoulos and his wife Maria Fotopoulou started as amateurs with five hives in the garden of their home in Akritochori, Messinia. They produced honey for their family's needs and to offer to relatives and friends. After a few years, they decided to become professional honey producers to share the taste and nutritional value of honey. Thus, in 1983, the five hives had become 200 and were moved to the region of Messinian Mani and the mountains of Taygetos.

In 1994, their son Charalambos Fotopoulos took over the business, having acquired the appropriate knowledge for the profession. Fotopoulos Beekeeping "Taygetos Honey" has been certified with ISO 22000:2005 for the production, packaging, and trading of beekeeping products since January 8, 2009.
