In 1980, Michalis Ch. Fotopoulos, along with his wife Maria Fotopoulou, tentatively started as amateurs with five beehives. They produced honey for their family's needs and to give as gifts to relatives and friends.

Later, they decided to become professional honey producers, and by 1983 the five beehives had turned into 200, moving the business to Messinian Mani and the mountains of Taygetos.

In 1994, their son Charalampos Fotopoulos took over the business, having attended beekeeping seminars. Fotopoulos beekeeping "Taygetos Honey" is certified with ISO 22000:2005.
